Police have confirmed that all currently known lines of inquiry have now been explored but they are still unsure as to whether the fire that destroyed the pier was an accident or an act of arson.

Following he fire in September 2008 teams of police, scientists and fire investigators have all carried out thorough investigations in an attempt to pin point the cause of the blaze.  Several people have been questioned following these investigations but to date nobody has been arrested.

Det Sgt Dave Reader, from Fleetwood CID, said: “We are basically at a standstill.

“We’ve got no new leads and we got nothing out of the last witness appeal where Ricky Hatton asked people with information to come forward. We are at an impasse unfortunately.

“If some new information comes in we will have a look at it and I would urge anyone with information to come forward.”

The investigation remains open and any new lines of inquiry will be followed up.  A £5000 reward offered by Pier Owner Mr Simmons is still available to anybody who has information that allows the police to discover the true cause of the fire.

Southend Council have issued a prospectus in which it is identified that following an infastructure survey the pier requires a considerable amount of investment to return the strucutre to it’s original strength prior to the 2005 fire.

The council has issued the prospectus as it seeks to attract development partners for the pier and doesn’t believe that these cost will put off potential partners.

The council is looking to retain the pier as a relaxed recreation attraction on a maritime theme as it doesn’t simply want the pier to be turned into a theme park in the sea.
